CARLOS ROBERTO KOCH
FARMER IN APUÍ – AMAZONAS
Combine farming and the Amazonian biodiversity conservation was one of the main challenges posed to the unionist Carlos Roberto Koch, 56 years old.
Resident in the Amazonian municipality of Apuí for 11 years and president of the Trade Union of Farmers in the South of Amazonas (Sindisul), Carlos is one of the many characters of that municipality trying to change the regional development paradigm.
“Few years ago farmers here didn’t know that deforesting everything was dangerous. So we destroyed the margins of creeks, at the springs, and didn’t care about the trees. But now we know this can’t be done any longer”, he says.
