PEDRO FLOR DA SILVA AND RAIMUNDO RIBEIRO GOMES – RUBBER TAPPERS
They are considered to be the major rubber tappers in Acre. The healthy competition between Pedro da Silva, 42 years old, and Raimundo Gomes, 52 years old, encourages them to work more and more and expand their rubber productions. “We joke a lot about who will be the winner of the year” says Raimundo, whose production reaches about 100 kg a month.
Another incentive to practice the activity was the implementation of a project to produce materials with higher added value that can be sold at higher prices. In partnership with the University of Brasilia (UnB), the government of Acre and WWF-Brasil, around 50 rubber tappers have being trained and equipped since 2009 to produce FDL (Smoked Liquid Leaf) and FSA (Semi-Artifact Leave) rubber, which cost R$11.50 and R$18.00 in the market, respectively. The technology previously used to collect rubber, the CPF (Compacted Virgin Field Latex) had many impurities and low cost of only R$5.20.
